The Big Island of Hawaii

Me and my family are going to Hawaii. First we are flying into Honolulu, then flying to Kona and finally driving to Waimea. People near Waimea have cattle ranches. I learned that the Spanish people taught Hawaiians how to be cowboys. About 9,000 people live in Waimea. Did you know Waimea is also known as Kamuele?

When we are in Hawaii we might climb the mountain of Mauna Kae. Mauna Kae is a dormant volcano. That means it is mostly likely not going to erupt. There are observatories at the top of the mountain. Did you know a lot of people go skiing and snowboarding at the top? I thought you could only go skiing in Alaska.

In Hawaii we also plan to climb Kilauea. Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes. Kilauea is the youngest volcanoes and the most southeastern volcano on The Big Island. Kilauea is thought to be the home of Pele, the volcano goddess. I think it's going to be a very good trip!

Volunteering

Community service has been built into Harold's school schedule. For two hours every other Tuesday he helps at the local MOPS gathering. He helps entertain and care for three and four year old children while their mothers meet with other moms.

A Fable

There once lived three pigs that lived in a valley. It was a happy life but when they went to school there was a big problem. They had to cross through the snake and the wolf's property. The wolf always stole and the snake was very mean.

One day a family moved in to the valley and in the family there was a karate teacher. One day the pigs decided to ask the karate teacher if he would teach them karate. The teacher said, "Yes!" The next day the three pigs went to class and the teacher warned, "You're not going to get this right away."

But the first pig did not listen. The next morning the first pig was not at class. The pig was off trying to get the bullies but he lost.

The next day all the pigs were back at practice. But then after five days the second pig was not attending practice. Like his brother, he tried to attack the bullies but he lost too.

But there was still one pig left. That pig practiced and practiced and he tried to defeat the bullies and he won!

Moral #1: Bullying will come back to hurt you.

Moral #2: Practice hard to learn well.

Traditions

Harold was given three writing assignments on the topic of tradition. Here's what he chose to write about:

Halloween

Halloween is an American tradition. First we dress up in nice smooth costumes and walk door to door yelling, "Trick or Treat." We get bucket loads of candy. Now we eat so much candy that we rot our teeth. Me and my friends are very happy for Halloween.

Day of the Dead

Day of the Dead is a Guatemalan tradition. First they mourn and remember people that have died. It is a three day celebration. Now they celebrate with their family at the gravesite. Next they light candles to bring down the souls of their passed on family members. They fly giant kites and when the kites rip they burn the kites. They believe that the smoke guides the spirits back to heaven. Last they eat a big feast. That is a Guatemalan tradition.

"Gotcha" Day

Harold's "Gotcha" Day is a family tradition. First we celebrate and remember. Then we watch a video of what we did when mom and dad came to get me. My gotcha day is the 22nd of October. Last we eat and have fun. That is my gotcha day tradition.
